Not every writer is a good translator (well, Murakami is) because it is hard to be so good at (at least) two languages that you can swiftly play with the words.A even better translator knows deeply about the cultural context of the cities/counties.
I translate between English and Chinese (Traditional/Cantonese/Taiwanese Mandarin and Simplified/Mandarin) because I have diverse cultural background very relevant to the languages. Born in Hong Kong, raised in mainland China, the first dialect I acquired was Shanghainese, the second is Mandarin while the third is Cantonese and fourth is, of course, English.
Yes, there are subtle differences among Cantonese, Taiwanese Mandarin and Mandarin in terms of the tone, manner and choice of words in writing. It is hard to find a person who can speak and translate fluently in these three language but I am one of those. I speak and write Taiwanese natively because I studied at National Taiwan University.
Oh, and I translate quickly too, if time is also your concern.
